Stringent

We refer to the letter headlined, 'Gas mystery' (South China Morning Post, January 24).

Shell has a set of stringent control procedures in place to ensure the accuracy of LPG cylinder filling. Empty cylinders will be filled by a filling machine and when the preset reading is reached, the filling gun will stop automatically. The filled cylinders will then be cross checked with another electronic weight checking scale.

An accuracy test is conducted daily for all electronic weight scales before filling operations and these electronic weight checking scales are calibrated every three months by authorised personnel. The Government's Gas Standard Office also visits our plant every three months to check our operations.

There are many possible reasons which account for higher gas consumption, for example, cold weather, change of appliance type and addition of appliance. Our technicians are more than willing to visit customers and make a detailed examination.

Your correspondent can ring Shell's customer services hotline at 2323 1000, so we can arrange a site visit.
