Wai-kit puts secrets on show

Lam Wai-kit has turned her photographs of friends into an exhibition at the Fringe Club called The Secret Gardens.

But she is not just concerned with showing familiar faces.

'I want people to look at these portraits and construct something out of it. As long as it provokes some questions in the viewer's mind, I'm happy.' The photographs are square black and white portraits - some candid, some posed. A coloured plate made from silicon rubber is placed to the right of each portrait.

'Some associate different colours with different emotions or a certain atmosphere. When they are placed next to the portraits, I wanted the viewer to draw their own conclusions and derive their own meaning,' says Wai-kit.

Yet she remains coy on the relevance of the colours to the portraits. 'Maybe the colours match the person's personality.' Wai-kit, a graduate in fine art from Goldsmith's College at the University of London, is an independent artist and part-time teacher.

'At college we had a broad study of art without specialising in any one discipline.' Her tutors encouraged her to be more flexible. As a result she uses different media to express herself.

The idea of construction is one which Wai-kit enjoys playing with.

'When people look at these portraits, they immediately construct something, whether it is forming their opinions about it or interpreting it in their own way.' Her next exhibition, Frozen Words, will be held in Toronto next month.
