Laser guns snare 900 since comeback

Almost 900 drivers have been charged with speeding after being detected by laser guns since the devices were brought back into operation two days ago.

A total of 1,247 drivers were caught speeding on Saturday and Sunday, 896 of them detected by laser guns.

A police spokesman said several operations coincided with the resumption of the guns' use throughout the territory.

Police stopped using the laser guns for five months after a Court of Appeal judge ordered them to be withdrawn during an appeal by a taxi driver accused of speeding.

The ban was lifted after the 23 laser guns were declared accurate.

Speeding prosecutions fell by 28.3 per cent to 46,450 during the suspension period, while traffic accidents rose by 11.8 per cent to 4,914, according to police figures.
