Optimistic view
In his column headlined, 'An SAR Asian Games would be no Sydney experience' (South China Morning Post, September 23), Albert Cheng said that it would not be in Hong Kong's best interests if its bid to host the Asian Games in 2006, was successful.
I believe that if we got the Games it would help us to promote local sport and enhance the image of Hong Kong. I disagree with his claim that in the ballot, Beijing will vote for Kuala Lumpur rather than Hong Kong.
Mr Cheng also argued that Hong Kong lacked the facilities needed to host such an event and that indifferent Hong Kongers would not buy tickets. He estimated that the Games could result in a loss to taxpayers of up to $945 million.
However, I think we can make this a viable event and I am sure that the opening ceremony would be delightful surprise for all those watching it in Asia and for those tourists visiting from the mainland.
