My family has been staunchly Republican ever since we emigrated from Norway to the US in 1870.
Despite that, I'm hoping Al Gore manages to wrestle the critical Florida votes away from George W. Bush and win the US presidency.
In the next four years, the economy is bound to turn. The recent hi-tech start-ups have stretched the business cycle but haven't abolished it. The stock market will drop. There will be a nasty little skirmish somewhere involving US troops. In the meantime, the Republican Party and its conservative allies will hold tight to their grievances and be ready for total war in the 2004 elections. If he beats Bush this year, Gore will be the last Democrat president for a generation.
