The article headlined 'Papers riddled with doubt' (Sunday Morning Post, April 1) by Philip Cunningham, about the organisation Human Rights in China (HRIC), requires clarification.
HRIC was not founded by Robert Bernstein, but by a group of scholars from mainland China, mostly scientists, who did not even know Mr Bernstein at the time. (He is the former chairman of publisher Random House and founding chairman of Human Rights Watch.) Subsequently, HRIC has had the good fortune to be able to get Mr Bernstein involved, and he is now the co-chairman, sharing the post with astrophysicist Fang Lizhi.
Mr Bernstein is not our sole source of funding. This is not and has never been the case.
In fact, all this information, including our sources of funding, is publicly available on our Web site (www.hrichina.org ). It is hard to understand why HRIC was mentioned in the article at all, when we were not involved with the publication of The Tiananmen Papers.
