Police were yesterday investigating a suspected case of sabotage after a Watson's distilled water bottle was found to contain disinfectant at a Mannings store in Diamond Hill.
The probe came after a nine-year-old girl complained to her mother that there was a bitter and strange taste from the water she had bought at the store in Plaza Hollywood shortly after 2.30pm. The girl's mother complained to store staff who then reported the matter to the police.
The girl was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she was allowed to leave after a check-up.
Police said initial investigations revealed that neither Watson's nor Mannings had received any threat or demands.
However, it appeared that the cap of the bottle the girl had bought had been removed earlier.
An investigating officer said police suspected someone had deliberately injected one or two drops of Dettol disinfectant into the bottle.
'We are treating the case seriously, it seems that it's a case of sabotage. We have sent the bottle to the government chemist,' he said. 'We will know the result in a day or two.'
