A man killed himself after he shot a policeman outside a bank in Zhuhai yesterday, Guangdong media reported.
The shootout occurred outside a branch of the Construction Bank in Zhuhai's Jingshan district yesterday morning when two policemen, Chen Shubin and Xie Sicai, intercepted a man after receiving a tip-off.
The man pulled out a gun, shot Officer Xie in the stomach and tried to escape. Officer Chen gave chase and was joined by three other officers.
The man, who was not identified, was soon cornered. He was shot twice by the officers and, refusing to surrender, shot himself in the head, the semi-official China News Service reported.
Reports did not say if the man was trying to rob the bank or if he was a fugitive. Officer Xie survived the shooting.
China has seen a spate of violent bank robberies in the past two years. On May 20, a gang led by Zhang Jun, responsible for a series of bank robberies in Sichuan and Hunan provinces, was executed.
