Macau liaison chief Wang Qiren dies

Wang Qiren, director of Beijing's Liaison Office in Macau, died of cancer yesterday in Guangzhou, the China News Service reported. He was 59.

Wang last appeared in public at the Liaison Office's spring reception in Macau. He went to Guangzhou for treatment after he suffered a relapse. Wang was appointed head of the Xinhua News Agency, now the Liaison Office, in May 1995. He was a former deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and became Bank of China chairman in December 1993.
