Former Magistracy is too small

YOU are correct to quote Mr Pau Shiu-hung of the Architectural Services Department (South China Morning Post, June 30) as telling members of the Legco Information Policy Panel that the former South Kowloon Magistracy appeared to be a good place for the Public Records Office. But you missed two important points made by Mr Pau and myself at the meeting - the building is too small, and occupies a prime site which is tentatively scheduled for sale in 1995-96.

Even if refurbished, the former Magistracy could accommodate only about half of the present Public Records Office.

There would be absolutely no room for expansion and very limited facilities for scholars to conduct research.

The other half of the Public Records Office would have to be located elsewhere.

The new record storage facilities in Tuen Mun will provide one-stop access in modern accommodation to all public records in Hongkong, and adequate space for expansion and consultation.

In addition, a reading room and depository for the most frequently used archival holdings will be provided in Central.
