Response applauded

I echo the sentiments expressed in Zhang Tianguang's article headlined 'China's foreign policy finally comes of age' (South China Morning Post, October 19). As a Chinese, I am proud of the manner in which China responded to the barbaric attacks on the United States on September 11.

President Jiang Zemin called US President George W. Bush immediately after the attacks offering help and condolences. China also supported a US resolution at the United Nations condemning the attacks and upholding of US's right to self-defence.

China has emerged from having a limited-vision of world affairs towards more participation and co-operation in fighting terrorism. I hope China continues to contribute to world peace and the prevention of terrorism, commensurate with its status as a member of the UN Security Council.
