Ordinance may offer legal solution

I refer to the letter from a mother of six children headlined 'Prejudice undermines mother's job hunt' (South China Morning Post, March 7).

She complains about a preoccupation by employers during job interviews with the effect the number of her children might have on her ability to work. As a result, she implies, despite good qualifications she has difficulty finding work.

There is a Hong Kong ordinance devoted to eliminating just this type of prejudice, the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance.

It makes clear that family status 'means the status of having responsibility for the care of an immediate family member' and that discrimination includes treating 'that person less favourably than he treats or would treat another person who does not have . . . the relevant family status'.

At first sight, it looks as if she should approach the Equal Opportunities Commission (www.eoc.org.hk) for assistance.
