Idea gets red-carded

I refer to the letter by Angelo Paratico headlined 'Hi-tech help for bumbling referees' (South China Morning Post, June 20).

I agree that some hi-tech measures could help referees and correct their mistakes. However, your correspondent's suggestion of using a pocket-sized screen might not be practical.

Imagine if a referee was unsure about a decision he had made and stopped the match for about 10 seconds while he viewed the playback. This might happen many times in one match and would greatly reduce the coherency of the game and undermine the aims of Fifa.

Also, the referee might have difficulty seeing the small screen if it was raining heavily. If the machine stopped working, the match would have to be halted until they got another one.
