NO TRUCK

NO TRUCK: Angry recyclers at Kai Tak yesterday dumped machinery and a lorry into the sea in protest at a government order for them to quit premises at the former airport.

A police spokeswoman said the action was being investigated. 'When officers arrived at the scene, all the people were gone and the lorry had already sunk out of sight,' she said.

The Marine Department said marine littering could be punished, but officials would not comment on whether action would be taken.

The trouble began shortly before 9am when a group of workers pushed a paper-compressing machine and a lorry into the sea off Kai Tak.

Wong Sak-hung, a waste-paper recovery operator, warned the closure of the site could put more than 300 recycling workers out of work.
