DOCUMENTARY WATCH

A Cruel Inheritance

World, 1.20am

Huntington's Disease is a fatal condition caused by a single faulty gene. It happens when cells die in a single, small area of the brain which helps control the movement of the body's muscles. While a blood test can confirm whether the mutated gene is present, until recently there has been no real prospect of treatment. However, doctors at a leading unit in Cambridge are beginning human trials of a controversial technique. This BBC documentary tells the stories of three people, Peter, Gaye (above centre) and Sam whose families are plagued by Huntington's and who are about to take a momentous step that will change their lives. As the team of doctors and scientists prepare for this cutting-edge experimental procedure, their patients wait for the most important news of their lives.
