AFTER reading the advertisements for the autopass toll-tag system, for use in the Cross-Harbour and Aberdeen Tunnels, I applied for a toll-tag.
I received the tag on July 31, and have used it daily since.
The Aberdeen Tunnel system is extremely effective and well managed, the system at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, however, leaves a lot to be desired.
On the approach to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, Hong Kong bound, there is a sign in the extreme right-hand lane that says autotoll lanes are in operation at the extreme left and right of the approaches to the tunnel; this is not true.
On nearing the toll-booths, only the system at the extreme left hand side of the road is in operation.
When travelling towards Kowloon, there is, allegedly, a toll-free lane, on the right hand side, allowing access to Kowloon North. I have never seen this in operation, only the extreme left hand lane is in operation. The system, despite allegedly having several thousand users, is biased towards buses. The time I save going through the autotoll lanes is negated by the time I waste changing lanes and waiting for traffic lights.
I would like to ask Autopass, and the Cross-Harbour Tunnel Company, when the lanes will be opened, according to their traffic signs, and, why has this not been done yet.
Despite paying my initial deposit, I have, on three occasions out of five, paid the $10 toll, because the autotoll was inconvenient, despite its assurances to the contrary.
Surely, the object of the exercise is to promote the scheme as much as possible and allow an easier flow of traffic.
