Gweipoh groan

THE mayors of the Italian Riviera (Sunday Morning Post, July 25) are to be congratulated.

I recently had the unpleasant weekend experience of not only being sober but also having to work. This led me to understand the puzzlement that I have endured since returning from a tedious two years in the rest of the world.

It is the pollution in Hong Kong. No, not the industrial pollution. It's the visual pollution and specifically that of the contrast of lithe, well dressed, demure Oriental ladies as against the overweight, underdressed, grungy, aggressive gweipohs. This contrast is most obvious at Kai Tak arrival hall. These examples of Britain, Australia and North America are an eyesore.

However, if they have to pollute the retina, then at least the Government can react positively and also profit.

I propose all gweipohs passing through Kai Tak are assessed by immigration officers as to presentability. Those gweipohs not meeting the standard will have to pay a ''Pollution Tax'', or failing that wear a ''chador''.
