So many raw deals at filthy wet markets

I read with interest Li Na's letter about the problems wet market traders are going through (South China Morning Post, November 6).

I will not feel sorry if wet market stallholders go out of business. I used to shop for fresh vegetables and meat at wet markets in Wan Chai. Sometimes I was treated fairly, but most of the time I got a raw deal. I used to be short-changed, was given pathetic-looking vegetables and was quoted inflated prices.

Often the vegetables were soaking wet and so they weighed more and that added to the cost. And because they were so wet, they had to be used that day. Sometimes a trader would yell at me if I changed my mind over a purchase. Wet markets are unhygienic. Most traders are rude and unwilling to give advice to shoppers who want to know more about the produce for sale.

The pressure from supermarkets represents healthy competition. Hopefully it will persuade wet market traders to reform their working practices and improve their attitude. Until that happens I will stick to the supermarkets.
