South Island, Sha Tin rule waves

The first-ever inter-school sailing regatta took place at Middle Island, near Repulse Bay, last weekend.

Forty-five students from seven schools participated in races in two classes (types of boat) - Topaz Class, for those familiar with life on the ocean waves, and Topper Class, for the less-experienced sailors.

Paul Dalton of The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, which organised the event, said the new competition aimed to offer sailing to all students in the SAR. 'The government now provides funds to schools who want to set up sailing programmes, and this event gives those schools a competition to aim for.' The one-day regatta would become an annual event, Dalton said.

South Island School won the Topaz Class, while Sha Tin College were top of the Topper Class.
