One weekend recently, while walking along Sham Chung Harbour on the edge of Tolo Harbour, I was amazed to see that we are still allowing inshore trawling by unmarked mainland Chinese trawlers. The boats were trawling above the coral reef in that area.
I have observed the same thing happen in Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island, off south Lantau Island and Emerald Bay in Sai Kung.
I understand from conservationists that our fish stocks are being depleted at an alarming rate. The mainland authorities have banned trawling in depths of less than 25 metres, as have Thailand and other Asian countries, so why are we not doing the same?
Most of our large trawlers operating out of Aberdeen fish in waters to the east of Taiwan and so they should not be affected by a ban in Hong Kong waters.
I assume the trawling in Hong Kong waters was kept as a sop to the local fishing trade. This cannot be a valid reason any more when unmarked mainland vessels are now the ones doing the trawling.
