Kai Tak passengers delayed

IMMIGRATION officers had a heavy workload over the holiday weekend and, with more staff than usual at Kai Tak reporting in sick, passenger delays were ''inevitable''.

Up to midnight, 38,377 people had arrived in the territory by air yesterday, with 31,132 people leaving.

Although the immigration duty officer at Kai Tak, Kwan Cheung-on, claimed the situation was normal, he admitted most passengers were having to wait in the immigration queue for about 30 minutes.

An Immigration Department spokesman said more than 20 officers had reported sick over the weekend, but claimed this was ''not significantly different from normal'', denying suggestions there had been collective staff action.

On Sunday, 270 officers had been expected to report for work.
