A matter of taste and opinion

Huang Hung, publisher and editor of Time Out Beijing and iLook, said that keeping up with the latest goings-on in a city like Beijing was tough enough - but training journalists to write a decent food review could be even tougher.

'If they are covering places to eat, they think that it is okay to let the restaurant know in advance, and sometimes even accept bribe money,' she said.

'I tell them they have to go undercover. It hard for them to understand that we are writing on behalf of the traveller, not the restaurant.'

The ex-wife of film director Chen Kaige and daughter of Zhang Hanzhi, Chairman Mao's English teacher, is the perfect blend of east and west.

Speaking about the special administrative region, she added: 'Because it is easier for [people from the mainland] to travel to Hong Kong now, I hope that HK people will eventually see that they are socially and culturally part of China.'
