Girl struck by falling stone

Doctors were last night fighting to save the life of a five-year-old girl who was hit on the head by a sharpening stone that fell from a residential block of flats at Yau Oi Estate in Tuen Mun.

Tang Chi-ting was leaving a nursery at the foot of Oi Fai House with her grandmother, 54, at 5.35pm when the piece of stone measuring 4cm by 12cm smashed into her forehead. The unconscious girl was rushed into surgery at Tuen Mun Hospital, where she was last night in a critical condition.

Police investigating the incident conducted a floor-to-floor search to track down who dropped or threw the stone.

Residents told officers they suspected a particular male tenant living on a high floor of Oi Fai House might be the culprit because he had previously been arrested for throwing objects from his flat.

Police went to the flat but the man was not home.

Officers were last night waiting at the apartment to question him and find out what time he left home yesterday.

No arrest has been made.
