Police were investigating reports that two suspected counterfeit $100 notes were found in Tze Wan Shan, local media reported on Wednesday.
The Crime Commercial Bureau and police are investigating the discovery, but have yet to release further details.
The Hong Kong Monetary Fund and HSBC were also helping the investigation.
Local media quoted sources saying the two suspected counterfeit notes were newly issued $100 notes by HSBC. They were retrieved at a news stand in Tze Wan Shan. They are suspected to have been made on the mainland.
This is the first time newly-issued notes - which now have four new security features - have been reported as suspected counterfeit notes. The new notes were issued last December.
