Fourth cholera case of the year confirmed

The fourth case of cholera this year was confirmed by the Department of Health yesterday. Like the previous three cases, the latest victim contracted the disease abroad. The 45-year-old man ate tainted raw fish while in Manila on June 18. The onset of cholera occurred the following day, when he returned to Hong Kong.

Four arrested in immigration swoop

The owner of three Wan Chai fruit juice shops and four of his mainland employees were arrested by immigration officers. The four, a man and three women, came from Guangdong on two-way visitor permits. The Immigration Department said visitors who breached their conditions of stay were liable to a fine of up to $50,000 and up to two years' jail. Employers can be fined $350,000 and jailed for three years.

Police officer faces district court trial

A senior police constable charged with theft and using false instruments faces trial in the District Court. Law Ka-keung, 38, appeared in Eastern Court after being charged by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. He allegedly used false receipts to interfere with a police internal investigation. Law did not enter pleas to the charges.

5 aid soccer bets probe

Police arrested five people in an operation against illegal soccer betting. Addresses in Cheung Sha Wan, Pat Heung and Tin Shui Wai were raided and $2 million in betting slips, computers and other bookmaking items were seized by officers.
