Theft of police uniforms sparks fears of imposter

The theft of uniforms from the police driving school in Fanling has raised concerns the thief will use the uniforms to impersonate an officer.

'It's common sense; you can figure it out,' said Chief Inspector Leung Wing-tai, the officer in charge of the driving school, yesterday. 'There are lots of situations where they could use the uniforms.'

The school has stepped up security since the burglary, but would not say how.

The theft was discovered by school staff at 8am yesterday.

Eight items of clothing and six pairs of boots - including a pair of police motorcycle boots - were stolen. The missing clothing included three summer shirts, two pairs of trousers, one police raincoat, a motorcycle helmet and a pair of sunglasses

The Sheung Shui Divisional Investigation Team is investigating the case.

The normal running of the school was not affected, and Chief Inspector Leung said new uniforms were being ordered.

The school is guarded by a private security company after office hours, and the chief inspector said an internal review about security would be conducted.

Chief Inspector Leung said: 'We will try our best to maintain sufficient security.'
