The rights to the tramway were acquired for $2,000 many years ago by the Peak Hotel owner, who wanted better access for his hotel guests. Originally operated by coal-fired steam boilers, it became electrically powered in 1926. Today, it can carry 120 passengers and makes more than 90 trips a day.
