Language point

While fruits contain more simple carbohydrates, they are still a healthy choice because they provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

We are all familiar with the word 'more'. We use it to indicate a greater number or amount of something than average, than before or than something else. However, be careful when it's used as above, where the word 'more' does not modify the word immediately after it. It actually means more 'simple carbohydrates', not 'more simple' carbohydrates.

Which word does 'more' modify?

1. Consume three or more 30 gram servings of whole-grain products per day.

2. United States government dietary guidelines recommend that people place more emphasis on counting calories, exercising and choosing the right kinds of carbs.

3. Complex carbohydrates ... provide longer-lasting energy and more nutrients.

Answers: 1. 30 gram servings 2. emphasis 3. nutrients
