It seems like veteran singer Alan Tam Wing-lun had an eye for romance even before he built his fame crooning romantic canto-pop ballads. Tam reminisced about his first love on the radio yesterday, and especially how he would wait for hours for a girl to come down from her house and meet him.
'I was 16 or 17 years old. I was in middle school and had just started playing music,' he said. They met through going to live band performances at youth clubs or churches, and went out with each other for a couple of months, but the relationship was not to be. 'She lived near the Kowloon City pier and I would wait there for her to come down.' He remembers once having waited six or seven hours for her. On some days she wouldn't go to see Tam at all. 'Thinking back on it now I can tell that she was just brushing me off,' Tam said. 'I was really crazy back then.'
She later fell in love with a drummer, one of their mutual friends.
But the worst part of it all for Tam? 'That she found it hard to open her mouth and just tell me that it was over. Even to this day.'
