Suspect extradited from Singapore in theft case

A 55-year-old man wanted for theft committed nine years ago was extradited from Singapore yesterday.

He is due to appear in Eastern Court today.

He is wanted in connection with a case in which US$852,200 from his client's bank account was transferred to his account in 1992 and 1996.

The man had acted as an agent in buying sewing machines and had the authority to withdraw and transfer funds from the victim's account.

A formal request was made to extradite the fugitive, alleged to have been travelling in and out of Singapore using different passports, in January. Singapore police arrested the man on January 27.

Water control measures for Hong Kong ruled out

Water control measures will not be imposed in Hong Kong this year, despite the risk of shortages in Guangdong. Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao Sau-tung told a special Finance Committee meeting that there was no indication the water supply from Guangdong would be reduced. But she urged consumers to conserve water and recycle it where possible.

The government is exploring additional water resources and studying seawater desalination to provide more drinking water.

No decision yet on using atrium for exhibitions

The government is still not saying when it will make a decision on the Trade Development Council's plans to convert the atrium link in the Convention and Exhibition Centre into extra exhibition space. Commerce, Industry and Technology minister John Tsang Chun-wah said the government had studied a council proposal and sent it to the Legislative Council for consideration.
