Macau wharf opens

THE new $800-million Macau-Hong Kong Maritime Terminal will begin operation from 7 am today.

The wharf was officially opened by Portuguese President Dr Mario Soares on Sunday.

It is 300 metres north of the old wharf. Shipping companies have suggested that outbound passengers allow at least an extra 20 minutes to board because of the size of the new terminal.

The first Hong Kong-bound vessel to use the terminal was Dr Soares' chartered jetfoil on Sunday evening. The first passenger service jetfoil will depart this morning.

Helicopter services will continue to use the old wharf for about a month.
