Lack of qualifications no barrier at job fair

More than 700 jobs, most of which are targeting people without tertiary education qualifications, will be on offer on Thursday in a job fair organised by the government. Thirteen companies from the retail and catering industries, property management, telecommunications and business services will participate in the event staged by the Labour Department in the Kwai Tsing Theatre. Eighty-five per cent of the jobs on offer require a Form Five education level or below and more than 60 per cent are open to job seekers without relevant experience. Most vacancies have a monthly salary ranging from $6,000 to $9,000.

police operation nets 29 across island

Twenty-nine people were arrested in an anti-crime operation across Hong Kong Island. Two men, aged 17 and 25 arrested in Aberdeen and Stanley, were alleged to have been involved in an assault on police on Wednesday. Seven men and 15 women were arrested for operating brothels and prostitution in Wan Chai. Others were arrested for possessing drugs and obscene video discs. The operation ran from 6am on Saturday until 4am yesterday.

Bicycle accidents take a tumble

The number of traffic accidents involving bicycles dropped by almost a quarter over the first half of the year compared with the same period last year. There were 736 such accidents up to June 30, a 23 per cent drop on the previous year. But police have still begun a three-week campaign to raise awareness of cycling road safety and to enforce rules.

truck driver hurt

A section of Yuen Long Highway near Lam Tei was closed when a container truck hit a roadside concrete block in the Yuen Long-bound lanes at 6am. The driver was slightly injured. The crash happened amid heavy rain.
