Haemophiliacs demand cash for HIV-tainted blood product

Disgruntled haemophiliacs from around the country protested outside the Shanghai Biological Products Research Institute yesterday, demanding compensation after the company allegedly manufactured a tainted blood product that infected them with HIV.

More than 20 protesters arrived in the morning, draping a banner on the gate which read: 'Restore justice. Clear my reputation. Apologise and compensate'.

Most of protesters sat on chairs, saying they wanted justice and compensation. Several police officers stood by, persuading passers-by not to stop.

Five patients lost a lawsuit against the company in a Shanghai court in April. A wheelchair-bound protester from Guizhou said about 50 victims from Shanghai received payouts from the company and the government three years ago but outsiders had still received no response.

Before production was stopped in 1995, about 10,000 mainland haemophiliacs had used the contaminated clotting agent.
