Elderly woman hospitalised after being given wrong drugs

Updated at 2.19pm: A 96-year-old woman had to be treated for low blood sugar levels in hospital after she took the wrong drugs at a home for elderly people, Apple Daily reported on Thursday.

The woman, who lived at the home, felt dizzy and collapsed after taking two drugs which caretakers had given to a diabetes patient, Apple Daily reported, quoting a Social Department spokesman.

Doctors said her blood sugar levels dropped to dangerously low levels. She later recovered and was discharged following treatment, the newspaper reported.

The department spokesman said caretakers had not checked that the diabetes? patient had taken the pills. This had increased the risk of the 96-year-old woman taking them by mistake, Apple Daily reported.

The department, which oversees services of Hong Kong?s elderly homes, was on Thursday reviewing recent cases in which caretakers had dispensed drugs wrongly.

The 96-year-old was the 11th elderly home resident rushed to hospital for taking the wrong drugs in the past three months.
