66 arrested as raids on triad nightspots continue

Police arrested 66 people in a second night of raids on more than 110 entertainment venues, most believed to be controlled by two rival triad gangs.

In the Kowloon West region, more than 100 officers, including those from the Police Tactical Unit, raided 65 premises during a nine-hour search, which ended at 3am yesterday.

Officers said the premises included nightclubs, massage centres, mahjong parlours and pubs in Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Mongkok, Shamshuipo and Kowloon City.

Seven men and 54 women, aged between 18 and 55, were arrested for offences such as possession of dangerous drugs, breaching condition of stay, soliciting for immoral purposes and operating vice establishments.

A police spokesman said the arrests included mainland visitors. A small quantity of dangerous drugs was seized in the raids.

Another team led by the New Territories North regional crime unit raided 51 entertainment premises in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long on Tuesday night. Four men aged between 17 and 35 were arrested in the raids.

Officers from the Kowloon East region made simultaneous raids in Kwun Tong and Wong Tai Sin, and arrested one man. A police source said the city-wide operation, codenamed Levington, targeted two triad societies - Wo Shing Wo and Wo On Lok.

The operation was launched after fighting between the triad societies resulted in a shooting in Tsim Sha Tsui on Monday.

Three suspected members of Wo Shing Wo were attacked with a shotgun.

Last night, Organised Crime and Triad Bureau officers were hunting two gunmen involved in the shooting.
