FORTY push-ups a day helped Lau Shing break three records and win the Grade C boys' championship at the Sha Tin Government Secondary School's 19th annual athletic meet, held recently at the Sha Tin Sports Ground.
The 13-year-old, who set records in the long jump, the 100 m and the 200 m, started to practise push-ups a year ago under the advice of his school PE teacher. He found the exercise boosted his strength.
''Our teacher told us that push-ups would build up our arm muscles and help us to improve our running speed,'' he said.
The second former said he was confident of winning the championship but never expected to break records.
''I feel very excited and very happy. I have taken full advantage of the fact that my major rivals have this year been promoted to Grade B,'' Shing said.
For his part, the Grade A champion Tang Tsz-ming boasted a secret strategy to achieve his success.
''I decided to shun the strongest opponents by entering less competitive categories like the high jump, 400 m and the 110 m hurdles. Although it was my debut performance in all three events, I calculated that I had a better chance to win,'' the shrewd 16-year-old said.
Not relying on this strategy alone though, Tsz-ming began training each day before school a month ago.
The fifth former said he was very pleased with the results as this could be his last year in this school.
Michelle Liu Man-ching, the Grade A girls' champion found that winning the title this year was made more meaningful because, as an HKCEE candidate, she may not be attending this school next year.
''I'm pleased to win because the competition was keen,'' the 16-year-old said. Michelle has participated in the sports day since Form One and this was her second championship win.
The results are as follows: Overall House Champion: Azalea House; Overall Boys' Individual Champions: Grade A, Tang Tze-ming; Grade B, Choy Ming-kin; Grade C, Lau Sing; Overall Girls' Individual Champions: Grade A, Liu Man-ying; Grade B, Tong Wai-man; Grade C, Luk Man-ki; Best Cheering Team: Jacaranda House.
