In at the deep end

Fu Mingxia (right) made quite a splash on Sunday at the new Le Sportsac Times Square. Helping the NGO Heifer sell its stuffed toy cows - to help poor Chinese farmers become more self-sustaining - the Chinese national hero, who won gold in diving at the Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Olympics, quickly drew a large crowd of shoppers clamouring for the HK$50 toy (at all Le Sportsac shops, Yugamama and Pylones) and a chance to meet her. Since marrying former financial secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung, Fu has kept a low profile and only became Heifer's ambassador because she liked its work.

'I think their method is really meaningful and special,' Fu said. 'Instead of just giving money, Heifer teaches farming and livestock skills. Those who benefit then have to pass on their skills and donate some livestock to others. The chain reaction is very positive.'

With two children of her own, has she considered coaching the next generation of Olympic divers in Hong Kong? 'I don't think I have the time now since my kids are quite young, but there's a good chance. If I get the opportunity I certainly would like to teach talented kids my diving skills.'
