What happened? Tens of thousands of people joined an anti-war demonstration in the United States sponsored by a coalition group, United for Peace and Justice, who hoped 100,000 would attend. It claimed afterwards that four times as many turned out, but police, who no longer give official estimates, said privately the crowd was below 100,000.
Where & When?
The crowds rallied last Saturday at the National Mall in the capital, Washington DC, chanting, 'Bring the troops home now' and waving banners reading: 'Escalation in Iraq? Wrong Way'.
Who & Why?
Who protested and why did they protest?
Military families, the public and famous actors staged the protest as poll respondents turned against US President George W. Bush ahead of a Senate vote expected early next month on a non-binding resolution condemning Mr Bush's new strategy to deploy 21,500 additional troops in Iraq.
