A look at the history of cameras

IF YOU ARE a photography fan, you might want to check out an exhibition which showcases vintage cameras and works by well-known local photographers at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin.

Running until September, Cameras Inside-out features more than 130 cameras from different eras on loan from David Chan, a vintage camera collector.

Ranging from devices dating back 100 years to modern digital camera phones, the displays show how the manufacture of cameras and photography has evolved over the past century.

Another highlight of the exhibition are pictures taken by a group of veteran photographers.

Taken from the 1950s to the present, the collection includes portraits of people and landscapes.

Featuring landmark events, such as water rationing in the 1960s and dazzling open-air nightclubs in the 70s, the photographs capture the vibrancy of Hong Kong.

One of the photographs on show is Water Palette, by renowned photographer Kan Hing-fook. Taken in 1953 at Tolo Harbour, the black-and-white photograph has won more than 80 international awards.

The Heritage Museum is at 1 Man Lam Road and is open from 10am to 6pm every day. Admission is HK$5 for full-time students (free on Wednesdays).
