Jockey proves a surprise winner

JOCKEY John Marshall scored his most improbable win of the season yesterday in the Hong Kong Professional Golfers' Association Golden Harvest Invitational Pro-Am at Fanling.

The Australian, one of the leading riders in Hong Kong, was not even among the original ''runners'' in the starting lineup.

But when one amateurs failed to show up, Marshall, who had been practising on the driving range by the first tee, was drafted in as a last-minute replacement.

Teaming up with trainee professional Sung Yau-fuk, Colonel Mike Winarick and John Niem, Marshall made numerous important contributions to his team's cause.

Sung fired a two-over-par 72 on the New Course, while Marshall's fellow 18-handicapper Niem and Winarick, playing off 14, also played their part.

In the event in which the best two net scores each hole were counted, Sung's quartet ended with an aggregate of 121 - 19 under par.

That was one stroke clear of the second-placed team of Discovery Bay assistant professional Man Hung-lap, Malcolm Newell, Shirley Semken and Jeffrey Yu.

Among the other high-profile amateurs in the tournament - a prelude to this week's Golden Harvest PGA Championship which tees-off tomorrow - were Sir Gordon Macwhinnie, England cricketer Dermot Reeve, horse trainer Lawrie Fownes and entertainers Alan Tam and Eric Tsang Chi-wai.

There were some impressive scores from the professionals with pride of place going to multi-time national champion Yau Sui-ming and Peter Tang, both of whom returned four-under-par 66s.

Yau was one over at the turn, but made birdies at the 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th coming back, while former Hong Kong representative Tang amassed seven birdies against three bogeys.
