Marisa Monte

Macau Cultural Centre

June 5, 8pm

Brazilian Marisa Monte makes a rare Asian appearance next month in Macau, and it's an excursion worth making to hear one of the world's finest and most distinctive voices.

'It's like the wind: soft, gentle, and caressing, but it messes with everything in its path,' said The New York Times' critic Larry Rohter.

Monte, a multiple Latin Grammy winner, is an accomplished songwriter, producer and musician. She plays more than a dozen instruments, from bass guitar to ukulele and viola, and has sold more than nine million albums.

The 39-year-old has collaborated with international artists such as David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Philip Glass.

Monte was trained as an opera singer, but her style is familiar to Brazilian music lovers: its heart is in samba and bossa nova, but it crosses over effortlessly into pop, jazz and rock, and her influences range from Marvin Gaye to Lou Reed.

She first won fans as a young bar singer in the late 1980s, performing her favourite songs from Brazil's back catalogue of musical gems.

In 2003, she produced two collections of songs - some obscure tunes and new ones written with the likes of Carlinhos Brown, Amaldo Antunes and Marcelo Yuka. The albums - Infinito Particular, a more traditional anthology of samba songs, and the pop-influenced Universo ao meu Redor - led to three more Latin Grammy nominations last year.

These tracks will probably make up most of her set in Macau. Along with some of her more sassy songs, they're bound to have the audience on their feet long before the encore.
