Aren't we all familiar with the feeling of seeing something so closely for so long that we no longer value its virtues and splendour? Many of us urban-dwellers have become so accustomed to seeing architectural wonders dotted along our skylines that we fail to appreciate the aesthetics of our cities. And so, with this in mind, we have dedicated this issue of STYLE to the design heavyweights of our generation and we pay homage to the innovative creations that shape tasteful, modern living.

The structurally expressive works of Pritzker Prize winners Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have rendered them two of the world's most compelling architects. Their clever manipulation of form is evident in their creations, such as the Tate Modern art gallery in London, the Prada flagship store in Tokyo and the Allianz Arena in Munich. Here, Herzog talks about the duo's design ethos and sheds light on their latest - and possibly most eagerly anticipated - project in Beijing.

Equally influential is Australian-born industrial designer Marc Newson, whose sexy, ergonomic and lighthearted creations exude originality. In this issue, Newson unveils a portfolio of his most famous works and talks about his design evolution.

Tyler Brule, founder of urban-chic magazines Wallpaper* and Monocle, and design agency Winkreative, invites Francesca Fearon into his holiday home in St Moritz. Known for his exquisite taste and dubbed an arbiter of style, Brule talks about his house and his love for the tranquil Swiss town.

Back in Hong Kong, when it comes to small flats, it is not necessary to sacrifice style for space. Jennifer Cardenas talks to some of the city's designers to discover ways to maximise compact apartments.
