Cheat's sentence cut

The 30-month sentence of a man who cheated investors out of more than HK$1.26 million has been cut by six months. Au Wing-kun, 53, pleaded guilty in the District Court to four fraud counts and one of theft after taking money from four people and spending it. But the Court of Appeal resentenced him to 20 months for theft and four months for the fraud charges.

Zeman reappointed to board

Allan Zeman has been reappointed chairman of Ocean Park for two years to July 1, 2009, along with Kevin Westley as deputy. Greg Wong Chak-yan - a member of the Antiquities Advisory Board, Town Planning Board and Harbourfront Enhancement Committee - will join the board. He was president of the Institution of Engineers from 2005 to 2006. Other reappointments are James Thompson, Patrick Lau Sau-shing, Jim Chi-yung, Paddy Lui Wai-yu and Thomas Mehrmann.

Call for handicapped respite

Chief Secretary Rafael Hui Si-yan has ordered the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau to establish temporary residential respite services for severely handicapped children under the age of 15. The Association of Parents of the Severely Mentally Handicapped said many parents relied on relatives to take care of their children when they are unable to through work or illness.

Smoker gets community service

An unemployed man was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and fined HK$1,800 for dropping a cigarette butt in public and assaulting a food and environmental hygiene officer when arrested. Kwun Tong Court heard 50-year-old Lo Sin-shun was caught dropping the butt in Shui Wo Street in Kwun Tong on January 13.

Hottest day of the year

The temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius at Tuen Mun and 33.5 at the Observatory's King's Park headquarters, the year's hottest day.
