A 19-year-old man from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has allegedly stabbed to death six people - two of them children and five from the same family - after the family disapproved of his relationship with their daughter.
A Yangshuo county police bureau spokeswoman said the man, Xu Lian , was caught in Puyi township late yesterday afternoon and taken back to county police headquarters for questioning.
The spokeswoman said Xu, who is from Yutang village in neighbouring Pingle county, had been on the run since allegedly stabbing five members of a family to death in Yangshuo county's Fengming village on Tuesday night.
The dead were a restaurant owner identified as Li, Li's mother, his wife, and his niece and nephew.
A waiter at the Li family's restaurant was also killed.
The spokeswoman would not give details on the victims but media reports said the niece and nephew were three and five years old.
The suspect reportedly forced his way into Li's four-storey home while the family was watching television in the living room.
Li's son and another waiter were able to escape by locking the door to the room they were in, but the son suffered severe knife wounds while fleeing.
The daughter whom Xu is believed to have been romantically involved with was working at the time and was unharmed, police said.
In the wake of the killings, police launched a manhunt and offered a 10,000 yuan reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
The reward was later raised to 100,000 yuan, the police spokeswoman said.
The Beijing News quoted a friend of the father as saying the suspect had been romantically pursuing Li's daughter but had been snubbed by the family.
'He probably has a grudge against Li and his wife just because of this. But little did we think that he would use such a brutal manner in revenge,' the unnamed friend was quoted as saying.
The police spokeswoman said Li's son had been admitted to hospital and his wounds were not life threatening.
