A group of 45 primary school children from CCC Fong Yun Wah Primary School in Tin Shui Wai, many from underprivileged families, were the first visitors to the book fair.
The field trip yesterday was organised by the Trade Development Council and welfare group St James' Settlement and each pupil was given a HK$100 coupon.
'Most of these students come from low-income families and they normally don't go as far as Wan Chai. Some haven't been to a book fair before,' said Josephine Lee Yuk-chi, senior manager at St James'.
Ms Lee said the group would like to organise another visit next year.
'This time it is only a half-day event and we want to see how it goes. If it's possible, we would like to make it a full-day event next year,' she said. 'A lot of kids have few or no summer activities and we certainly want to help those from low-income families.'
She said that some children cherished their book coupons so much that they did not want to use it.
'I'm very happy today. We got here at 9am, and this is the first time I visited the fair,' said Primary Four pupil Fok Yee-ting, who bought a few adventure books.
The students toured the fair until they settled in hall 5, 'the children's paradise', to shop for souvenirs.
