Ting Shi

A former  mainland military leader was instrumental  in promoting a corrupt provincial party leader who was recently kicked out of the Communist Party for taking huge bribes, a Hong Kong-based human rights group said yesterday.

General Zhang Wannian , 79, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission between 1995 and 2003, was the uncle of former Shandong provincial deputy party secretary Du Shicheng ,  according to the Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. The  group cited one of General Zhang's relatives surnamed Chen as saying that Du was the son of one of General Zhang's sisters.

Du, 57, rose to the position of vice-governor of the eastern province in 1995, when General Zhang became one of the most powerful men in  the People's Liberation Army, the report said.

In 2003, Du became party boss of Qingdao , the port city where the 2008 Olympics yachting events are set to take place,  and was promoted to provincial deputy party chief  in 2004.

He was sacked in December and stripped of his party membership in April for taking bribes worth millions of yuan and helping his mistress obtain lucrative Olympic project contracts.
