Let's act to save our precious trees

Nowadays, people often see money as the most indispensable thing in life.

They completely ignore the environment, especially trees, in their pursuit of material comforts.

They have no time to take a stroll in tree-lined parks and enjoy the beauty of nature.

According to recent news reports, some ancient trees are dying because concrete has been poured over their roots.

In addition, many trees are blown away by storms during summer.

Trees are essential for humans. The fact that trees release oxygen and absorb harmful chemicals in the air is such a blessing for all of us.

Some people think that trees have been planted on the roadside and in parks just for decoration.

I urge the government to promote environmental protection among the public.

Organising more tree-planting activities is a good start.

I hope all citizens will give a helping hand to save our precious trees.

The good life

I'm writing in response to the letter 'Lead a healthy lifestyle and be happy' (Young Post, July 26). I agree that people should eat well, sleep well and smile.

Besides, they should drink eight cups of water a day.

It is also important to come up with ways to reduce stress. Learn to say 'no' if you are unhappy about doing something.

So, take it easy, and have a happy, healthy life.

Discuss TV shows with your parents

Watching TV can have different effects on young people.

There are many programmes which provide valuable information to the students. They can make use of this knowledge in their daily lives. Then others will realise that the students are up to date with what's happening around the world.

Some viewers prefer entertainment, so they watch concerts and other music shows. On the other hand, violent programmes have an adverse effect on viewers, especially youngsters.

They may copy the characters in the show which should be discouraged.

Some programmes on well-known personalities or celebrities also raise questions.

Parents may disagree with the values associated with the stars, so this could lead to arguments with their children.

If teenagers want to prevent such problems, they should watch TV with their parents. Afterwards, they can talk about what's good and what's bad in the programme.

This way, we can get the best out of TV and enjoy watching it, too.

No room for cheats

I'm writing in response to the letter 'Cheats always lose out in the end' (Young Post, August 7).

Students don't do well in exams because they play computer games and talk a lot on their mobile phones.

Some of them may resort to fraudulent means to gain good results.

It's not surprising to hear that four students cheated in this year's HKCEE. I hope they realise that cheating in an exam is a very serious matter.

Cheats will never succeed because their shortcomings will be easily found out.

We must work hard and be honest.

Point out mistakes in a nice way

When we have a conversation with others, we should think before we speak.

Some people find it hard to express their feelings because of their poor communication skills.

I had a different problem. I used to speak my mind in junior secondary school so I didn't have many friends. I directly pointed out my schoolmates' wrongdoing and they didn't like it.

I told my mum and class teacher about this.

They told me that I should think carefully before I speak.

My mum said we can be nice while pinpointing other people's mistakes.

She said that when I was five years old, I had broken a cup, but my father didn't scold me. He had said: 'Are you all right? I love you, my dearest.'

This worked because I never broke anything again.

Thereafter, I used a similar method to tell my friends about their mistakes, and they weren't angry.

My class teacher said beautiful words can help strengthen a relationship.

Chinese medicine needs a boost

Chinese medicine has a long history but a majority of people have more faith in western drugs.

A survey has revealed that Chinese medicine is safer and easier for humans to absorb since it is made from natural herbs.

Also, it is much better at treating chronic illnesses.

This proves that Chinese medicine has a valuable role to play in society.

I believe that both Chinese and western medicine have their advantages and disadvantages.

For example, patients can recover in a short time if they take western medicine.

But they cannot take pills or other types of drugs over a long period since they may cause side-effects.

Chinese medicine is good for our body but it can take a long time to cure an illness.

I think it is a good idea to give Chinese medicine practitioners a chance to treat patients in public hospitals.

It not only gives a wider choice for patients, but also helps to polish up the image of traditional medicine.

Trust holds key to a happy family

Have you ever argued with you parents?

Maybe you caught them checking your blog or dairy and there was a big argument.

Many parents are concerned that their children will go astray, especially if they have bad friends. But teenagers like freedom; they may not want to be controlled.

A minor problem may lead to big trouble. Many things happen that could cause arguments between children and parents.

I think it is normal for parents to worry about their children. But they should give their children some privacy.

If parents always spy on their children, there will be no trust within a family.

If you talk with your parents about your feelings, then they won't spy on you anymore.

Think positive

Everybody has to cope with failure. Scientist Thomas Edison failed many times in his bid to invent a light bulb.

Today, we hear a lot of stories about people killing themselves.

Committing suicide is an extremely silly act. If you lose your money, you can work hard and earn it. But if you lose your life, you can't find a new one. So be positive all the time.

Even when you are in trouble, don't think negatively.

If you try your best to solve a problem, no one will be angry with you.
