Fownes to light up the city circuit, again

Horse racing is never an exact science, but following Caspar Fownes at Happy Valley is as close as you can get to a 'golden rule' in racing.

Last season, the premier handler made Happy Valley his spiritual home, winning 33 races and memorably preparing at least one winner for 13 successive meetings at the city circuit.

Fownes kicked off his new Valley season in much the same way he finished the old, landing Hold Hands (Jacky Tong Chi-kit) at the opening fixture last Wednesday.

Tonight under lights at the city venue, Fownes has two pre-post favourites and a number of other strong chances to boost his already-impressive stats on the island.

In the opener, Kaiser's Choix (Shane Dye) has been bet down to $41 favourite by the early players in the Shouson Hill Handicap (1,650m).

Kaiser's Choix has the benefit of race fitness, having gone around last week with no luck from a wide barrier but will enjoy a much less strenuous passage this time from barrier two.

Later, Fownes will saddle up smart young sprinter Top Top Light, to be ridden by Gerald Mosse, in the Deep Water Bay Handicap (1,200m).

Top Top Light handsomely won a barrier trial at the Valley on September 8 and will take all the beating from the coveted inside alley. Top Top Light, a first-up winner for Fownes last term, was a $42 favourite on last night's 7pm tote call.
