Call it tough love. Page One, the trendy book chain for yuppies, has a leather whip called 'the rod of kind love'. The whip, of which the end is shaped like a hand, sells for HK$25 and is labelled 'short', so apparently there is a 'long' whip as well. It is found among the Chinese-language children's books. That is one hell of a way to encourage kids to read!
Made in China by Oxford Family Products, the whip carries a label which says it is suitable for - or on? - children aged three and up. An instrument of corporal punishment? That would seem a bit regressive for a liberal city like Hong Kong. Perhaps it should be put in the adult books section - for amorously adventurous couples.
