If your significant other says, 'Let's go Dutch this weekend', it doesn't necessarily mean they're going to pay half the dinner bill. They could be referring to the Dutch Village at Chater Garden this weekend to celebrate the culture of the Netherlands. The event marks the county's 150-year diplomatic presence in Hong Kong.
'In Holland, a lot of people know that Hong Kong is a very special place in China but the other way round, I am not sure if people here know much about Holland and our traditions,' said Consul General Jan Revis.
The fair runs from tomorrow until next Friday with booths to demonstrate the manufacture of well-known Dutch products such as cheese and clogs. Hong Kong has a Dutch community of about 4,000, Revis said. The festivities will include a charity gala tomorrow at the Four Seasons highlighted by the auction of a 121-facet rock cut by Amsterdam Gassan Diamonds, said to be worth over HK$120,000. 'I am not a diamond expert and I don't think I will be buying the diamond myself but my wife may think differently,' Revis added. Needless to say, he also can't relate to the Dutch character Goldmember in the Austin Powers movie.
